Niger delta, home to 20 million people and 40 dissimilar ethnic groups, this floodplain makes up 7. 5% of nigeria’s total land mass. It is often times called the land of cash. Niger delta is the greatest wetland and maintains the third-greatest drainage basin in africa. Its surroundings may be broken down into four ecological zones: coastal barrier islands, mangrove swamp forests, freshwater swamps, and lowland rainforests.
This wondrously well-endowed surroundings, contains one of the most eminent concentrations of biodiversity on the planet. The area is bearing serious environmental pollution due to the extraction and processing of crude oil. Some of these difficulties are oil spills, water, air, land and noise pollution.
Research as shown that the region could face a loss of 41% of its inhabitable terrain in the following thirty years as a consequence of extensive environmental degradation and dam construction in the region.
Already the region is experiencing the impact of the environmental difficulties which include acid rain, destruction and migration of fishies, infatile farm land, lack o clean-drinking water, no good air, noise pollution. Gas flaring is similarly a major problem in this region. Along with the lack of of gas flaring, another problem gas flaring poses is the release of big amounts of methane, which has very high global warming potential.
Areas like eket and it’ surroundings in akwa ibom state are already importing drinking water from neighbouring communities, port-harcourt, bayelsa, delta, etc are dying of the some environmental pollution.
Dispite these very harmful environmental impacts, the federal government and the oil industy are carelessness when it comes to the situation, which is the causes of the popular militancy, killings, vandalism, shortage and irregular supply of oil, crime and popular unrest nigeria and the dependent nations for nigeria’s oil are facing today.
With the polluting of the waters of this country and the destruction of vegetation and agricultural land by oil spills which occur for the duration of petroleum operations, one may conclude that portion of the earth is dying rapidly
